The executive brief

Some life insurance policies offer accelerated death benefits or riders that allow qualifying access to a portion of the death benefit during certain serious health events.

What “living benefits” actually means

The phrase covers different contract provisions. Common triggers can include qualifying terminal illness, chronic illness, or critical illness, depending on the policy and rider.

A trigger is not a guarantee of payment

Definitions, waiting periods, medical evidence, exclusions, and benefit limits determine eligibility. A diagnosis alone may not satisfy the contract.

Acceleration changes the death benefit

Amounts advanced during life typically reduce what remains payable at death and may involve discounts or administrative charges. This is not equivalent to comprehensive long-term-care insurance.

Review tax and public-benefit consequences

Tax treatment depends on the benefit and circumstances. Accelerated benefits can also affect eligibility for means-tested programs; seek appropriate tax and benefits guidance.

Remaining benefit

Original death benefit = accelerated portion + remaining benefit. Conceptual only; not a guarantee or actual product illustration.
